Pelargonium graveolens, also known as Rose Geranium, is a perennial plant
native to Africa but was introduced to the European countries during the
17th century. There are about 750 different varieties of Pelargonium that
have been hybridized, many of which are grown for ornamental purposes. Only
a few varieties are principally cultivated for distillation of Geranium
essential oil. The oil varies, depending on growing conditions and species.
Pelargonium graveolens is often called the Bourbon Geranium because the
plant was first cultivated on Reunion Island, formerly one of the Bourbon
Islands. Although the oil is often used by the pharmaceutical industry to
make synthetic and to adulterate true Rose oil, the two species are
distantly related.
Similar to all flower oils, Geranium essential oil is antidepressant and
antiseptic. It is also a valuable astringent and a haemostatic, which makes
it very useful in treating injuries. It also promotes speedy healing.
Geranium oil is used as a common ingredient in skincare for its antiseptic
and astringent properties and actions in balancing the production of sebum,
as well as for its delightful perfume. This makes it valuable for skins that
are excessively dry or oily, or for dry skins with oily patches.
Geranium essential oil also has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic
system, and this combined with the diuretic action can be an effective
treatment for cellulites, fluid retention and oedema of the ankles. The two
properties reinforce each other in helping the body to eliminate fluids more
efficiently, and in fact Geranium is a valuable aid to elimination in
general, having a tonic effect on both the liver and kidneys.
The fragrance of Geranium essential oil is a herblike combination of rose,
with some citrus and a suggestion of wood.
The reaction of Geranium oil is valuable in emotional balancing and solace
encouraging. It can balance a passive aggressive nature and relive anxiety,
irrational behavior and stress.
Geranium essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic, non-irritating
and generally non-sensitizing; however, it may cause sensitive to some
people due to the fact that it balances the hormonal system. Geranium
oil is not recommended to be used during pregnancy.
