Clary Sage (salvia sclarea) is a tall, biennial herb that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. The herb is well-known for its highly aromatic heart-shaped leaves that emit a scent reminiscent of fresh grapefruit. In full bloom, Clary Sage produces white flowers and lilac or purple leaf-like bracts. Though traditionally grown for its medicinal properties, Clary Sage is now a highly prized ingredient in the food, perfume and cosmetics industries. Both Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Clary Sage produce essential oils, and they share many of the same therapeutic properties; however, the use of Clary Sage essential oil in aromatherapy is preferred over Sage due to its much lower content of thujene, which poses lower risks of toxicity when used in the treatment of physical ailments.

Due to the high content of linalyl acetate, Clary Sage essential oil is highly antispasmodic. It is an excellent relaxant used to ease both physical and mental tension. It restores and invigorates the body during convalescence from illness, strengthens the immune system, and helps soothe spasms and tightness in muscles. For mental tension, the oil induces relaxation, helps regulate blood pressure, and is effective for feelings of paranoia, panic, or hysteria. Studies have shown that high blood pressure often decreases after a Clary Sage bath or inhalations.

Clary Sage essential oil is an emmenagogue. It encourages menstrual flow and is frequently used in aromatherapy to help with symptoms of menopause and Premenstrual syndrome. It can also be used as a massage oil or hot compress to ease digestive problems such as cramps and colic pains. The oil is also used for its antiseptic, astringent, carminative and deodorant properties. These properties make it useful in the treatment of boils and infections as well as in skin care.

Clary Sage essential oil has sweetly herbaceous yet slightly musky top notes, with a tinge of nut and floral undertones.

Clary Sage essential oil balances the extremes of emotions and restores emotional equilibrium. It is valued as a mood elevator, and its uplifting qualities may ease feelings of depression with a relaxing sense of euphoria.
