Pelargonium is native to the dry, arid highlands of South Africa. Their thick stems and roots enable them to store water and withstand long periods of drought. The strong scent of the leaves is distasteful to animals and protects the plants from being eaten. In its natural state, the hardy Pelargonium is stunted and grows to a height of only 2 to 3 ft. It is harvested when its scent is the strongest, just before flowers appear. The plants are dried so that less water remains to be vaporized and the yield of oil is higher. Most of the essential oil is found in the heart-shaped, serrated leaves.

Geranium essential oil appears to regulate the flow of blood. It is recommended for most ailments that are caused by imperfect blood circulation, including high blood pressure, varicose veins, hemorrhoids and dizziness. The oil is bracing and revitalizing. It should not be used before bed because it stimulates memory and keeps one from sleeping.

Geranium essential oil is also good for the skin on account of its anti-inflammatory qualities. It is often recommended for boils, acne, dermatitis, eczema, dry skin and burns. It can be rubbed onto chicken pox to prevent itching and is used in healing salves that are applied to the skin after plastic surgery. It also protects the skin against aging.

Geranium essential oil has a tempering quality without being a sedative. It is recommended to relieve menstrual disorders, hot flashes, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety and stress. It also has antidepressant qualities and sometimes suggested as a remedy for sluggishness.

Geranium essential oil has sweet, herbaceous top notes and rosy, woody undertones.

Psychologically, Geranium essential oil creates a sense of security and comfort, and is gently uplifting and balancing. It can be used as an effective antidepressant to relieve feelings of stress.
