Known as one of the four true Cedars in the world, the Cedrus deodara is a
member of the Pinaceae family and is native to the Himalayas from eastern
Afghanistan to Garhwal in northwestern India. The tree can grow up to 76
meters high with ascending and spreading branches. Its needle-like leaves
are triquetrous, present in whorls and dark green with a silver sheen.
Flowers, open in autumn, are cone-like in shape and occur upright on
horizontal branches. Similar to other Cedars, the heartwood of Himalayan
Cedarwood is highly aromatic and yields about 2.1% of essential oil.
Himalayan Cedarwood essential oil is an excellent choice for treating
respiratory problems. It eases coughs and decreases the discomforts of colds and
the flu. As an expectorant, it helps expel mucus from the lungs; it also
decrease the congestion common with bronchitis and sinusitis.
