Bay is a member of the Lauraceae family native to the southern
and eastern Mediterranean coasts. It is now the only genus of the family
still to be found on mainland Europe. The Bay tree usually grows in
scrub near the coast and in gorges, often by springs and streams. Bay
tree can grow up to 15 meters high and is upright in habit when young.
The highly aromatic leaves are usually 5 to 10 cm long, leathery and pinnately
veined. Flowers, open in spring, have 4 petals, small,
creamy-yellow in color and can be bisexual or unisexual. The berry-like
fruits are 1 to 1.5 cm long and shinning black. Bay essential oil is
extracted from its leaves through steam distillation.
Bay oil can boost the
immune system and help ward off viral and bacterial infections. It can also
help indigestion and relieve gas. The fragrance alone deters insects like
grain weevils and moths. One of the most popular uses of Bay essential oil
is in a liniment or massage oil to stimulant lymph and blood circulation.
The oil produces a heat sensation, which alleviates muscle tension when
rubbed on the body. Studies prove that inhaling the oil can relieve
headaches, as well as sinus and lung congestion. A massage oil made with Bay
is prefect when lymph glands swell and head feels foggy due to any type
infection.
The scent of Bay oil is fresh and spicy. It has camphor-like top notes
rounded off by warm, balsamic undertones.
Bay essential oil has stimulating qualities that help to release repressed
emotions or blocked energy, while helping to warm the spirit and enliven the
personality. It can help overcome sadness and emotional exhaustion.
Bay essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic and
non-irritant. It should be used in moderation due to possible narcotic
properties attributed to methyl eugenol. Pregnant women should avoid the
use of this oil.
Do not take essential oils internally or use without the guidance of a
