Grapefruit is a citrus tree of the Rutaceae family and a popular breakfast
staple in various parts of the world. It is a hybrid of Pummelo and can grow
as tall as sweet orange trees, reaching up to 20 feet high. The tree has
dark, shiny green leaves that grow thickly with large, white flowers that
grow either singly or in clusters. The best known part of the tree is the
fruit, which ranges from 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The juicy pulp comes in
several hues, such as light yellow, pink and red. Grapefruit is a great
source of Vitamin C next to Orange and Lemon. Like other citrus oils,
Grapefruit essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the fruit rind.
Known for its
"sunny" effects, Grapefruit essential oil is a reliable antidepressant
that can be used to combat lethargy and the emotionally depressing
effects of winter. It is non-sedative and can help alert the mind,
though it is largely overlooked by a number of therapists. Grapefruit
oil is also a diuretic, detoxifier and stimulant of the lymphatic
system, and is used to treat fluid retention, cellulite and other
ailments that involved un-eliminated toxins.
Unlike most citrus oils, Grapefruit essential oil is not a
photosensitizer. Although it also contains Furocoumarins that can cause
photosensitization, it is neutralized by one or more constituents
present in the oil. As a result, it is a valuable alternative to other
citrus oils especially in applications where exposure to direct sunlight
is unavoidable. Another usefulness of Grapefruit oil is that it
helps to keep the muscles in top shape. When used in massages,
particularly after heavy exercise, it can help relieve muscle aches and
stiffness.
The scent of Grapefruit
oil is reminiscent of the aroma exuded by its fresh fruit. The top notes are
clean and fresh and the undertones are sweet and citrus-tinged.
It is believed that
the fragrance of Grapefruit essential oil can help increase self-esteem and optimism.
The refreshing and reviving scent helps lessen stress, depression,
exhaustion and tension. Similar to Bergamot, the scent of Grapefruit is
excellent for driving away lethargy and the winter blues.
Grapefruit essential oil is
non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritant. It is also non-phototoxic,
unlike other citrus oils. However, once oxidation begins, it can cause
skin irritation and sensitization; therefore, the oil has a very short
shelf-life, usually within 6 months of purchase.
