Neroli, also known as "orange blossom", is the flowers of the same Citrus aurantium var. amara that produces bitter orange and petitgrain essential oil. While petitgrain is extracted from the tips (branches and leaves), and bitter orange comes from the fruit peels, Neroli essential oil is obtained from the freshly picked, ready-to-open blossoms. It takes about 1000 lbs of orange blossoms to make only 1 lbs of Neroli essential oil, making it one of the most precious oils in aromatherapy. The oil is named after an Italian princess, Anne-Marie de la Tremoille, Countess of Nerola, who discovered the oil and used it to perfume her gloves and bath. Today, Neroli is used extensively in high-class perfumery works, and is a key constituent of true eau de cologne.
