Petitgrain Essential Oil

Petitgrain essential oil is extracted from the leaves & twigs of the same tree that produces Bitter Orange and Neroli oil. Originally the name "Petitgrain essential oil" denoted only the oils obtained from Citrus aurantium var. amara, but now similar oils made from other citrus plants, such as Sweet Orange, Lemon, Bergamot and Mandarin, are also called Petitgrain oil. The best Petitgrain comes from the Mediterranean region and a cheaper grade is imported from Paraguay.

Correspondingly, Petitgrain bears a therapeutic resemblance to Neroli, but its properties and effects, for example as a sedative or nervine, are usually less dramatic and less powerful. Petitgrain is similarly antiseptic and deodorant. It is also decidedly antidepressant and it is good to have this alternative to Bergamot and the other antidepressant citrus oils where help is needed for a long period. It is a valuable oil for insomnia, more so if the sleeplessness is linked to loneliness and unhappiness, rather than anxiety or an over-active mind.

Petitgrain essential oil has a fresh, flowery, light perfume, resembling that of Neroli but less bitter.

Psychologically, Petitgrain oil is revitalizing, balancing, nourishing and can clear away troubled emotions.

Petitgrain essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing. Unlike its family member bitter orange oil, Petitgrain is non-phototoxic.
