Rosemary Essential Oil

A member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family, Rosemary is an evergreen perennial herb native to the coasts of the Mediterranean. It can grow up to 6 feet high. The tinny, needle-like leaves, about 1.5 cm long, are dark green on one side and pale on the other. Rosemary is famous for its strong aromatic scent and powerful taste. It is now widely cultivated throughout Europe and North America for marinating food and beverages. Rosemary essential oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation.

Rosemary essential oil is an excellent analgesic without having the sedative effect that associates with other pain-relief oils. The stimulating effect of Rosemary is a popular treatment for cases wherein there is loss or reduction of functions, such as temporary paralysis. It is also a brain stimulant, and is believed to improve memory.

Few other oils can claim to be as multipurpose as Rosemary. Its stimulating property makes it a great cure for mental strain, lethargy or exhaustion, as well as chronic fatigue and multiple sclerosis. When used as a steam inhalation, Rosemary can be a valuable cure for respiratory ailments ranging from the common cold to sinusitis.

Rosemary essential oil has strong, fresh, minty-herbaceous top notes that vanishes rapidly and yields woody, slightly balsamic undertones. The aroma of Rosemary oil contains slight hints of camphor and a pleasant, bittersweet smell. This camphoraceous note is stronger and somewhat harsh in low quality oil.

The scent of Rosemary essential oil is best known for its stimulating, purifying and protecting properties. It is a traditional ingredient in incense due to its ability to aid meditation, clear the mind and improve alertness.

Though non-toxic, non-irritant (in low concentration) and non-sensitizing, Rosemary essential oil should be avoid during pregnancy and by those who have epilepsy and high blood pressure.
