Like so many fragrant herbs, Anise is native to the southern Mediterranean and has been cultivated in warm climates since the earliest times. Anise is a tender annual herb, seldom growing more than 2 ft high. It has simple basal and upper leaves that are like those of flat-leaved parsley when young, becoming more feathery as they age. The yellowish white flowers open in summer. The seeds take a long time to ripen, and have a very strong aromatic, penetrating sweetness that is warming and pervasive.

Antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, galactagogue, stimulant and stomachic.

Anise essential oil has a warm, spicy-sweet characteristic scent reminiscent of anethole.

The fragrance enhances relaxation, sleep patterns, emotional balance and even a sense of humor. It relieves stress from over-work and overcomes heartache.
