Cypress is an evergreen conifer of the Cupressaceae family that thrives in
the temperate and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Europe and North America.
Cypress trees are pyramidal in shape and can grow as high as 80 feet. It has
small flowers with round brownish cones that usually grow near the tips of
particular branches. Mature Cypress has aromatic leaves that are small,
pressed closely to branch. Several species of Cypress produce different
variations of its essential oil. Oil from Cupressus sempervirens is
considered best in quality and can be extracted from the needles and twigs
by water or steam distillation.
Essential oil of Cypress is a well-known tonic for the circulatory system.
Gentle application to affected areas can lessen the presence of varicose
veins. Cypress oil is also a valuable astringent that can be used to treat
any case wherein there is an excess of fluid, such as incontinence, bilious
attacks, heavy menstruation, bleeding gums, oedema and excessive
perspiration. It can also be used as a wash or ointment to cure piles.
Cypress essential oil is antispasmodic, particularly helpful in the
bronchial area. It is one of the best oils to use during bouts of asthma.
Cypress essential oil can also be used to regulate menstruation and relieve
other menstrual issues such as pain and excessively heavy flow. It is best
used during the early stages of menopause.
Cypress essential oil has a smoky, woody scent reminiscent of turpentine,
though not quite as much as Juniper Berry oil. Its aroma has spicy and
resinous top notes with sweet balsamic undertones.
The scent of Cypress is cooling and calming, and is an excellent aid for
meditation particularly for the grieving or in pain. A traditional
ingredient in purifying incense, Cypress has a protecting and refreshing
scent that helps improve the flow of stagnant energy within the body. It is
a symbol of eternity and is believed to increase wisdom and strength, as
well as provide psychic protection.
Cypress oil is generally regarded as non-sensitizing, non-irritant and
non-toxic.
