Distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, Juniperus communis, the
Common Juniper, is an aromatic evergreen shrub belongs to the genus
Cupressus of the family Cupressaceae. Depending on the altitude at which it
is cultivated, the plant can reach 3 meters tall or higher. It has narrow,
needle-like leaves growing oppositely in whorls of 3. The fruits are
berry-like and small, ranging from 6 to 10 mm in diameter. The berries are
green at first, but turn dark blue in the second year, when they are
considered ripe. Juniperus is a variable species with many geographical
varieties; however, only berries from Juniperus communis yield good quality
essential oil.
Perhaps, one of the most important functions of Juniper Berry essential oil
is the diuretic action. It has a special affinity with the urinogenital
tract and will dramatically reduce retention of urine. It can be used
externally as a cleanser, to help the body release fluids and throw off
toxic wastes. It is also one of the best oils for treating minor
uncomplicated genitourinary tract infection such as cystitis, which often
responds very well to aromatherapy.
Juniper Berry oil is also a very good astringent, and is used in the
external treatment of hemorrhoids either in the bath or as a local wash. The
essential oil can also be a great help in several skin conditions, such as
eczema, dermatitis and possibly psoriasis.
The aroma is distinctively
rich, warm, floral and sweetly exotic. It has fresh, clean, turpentine
top notes and smoky, balsamic, woody, pepper undertones.
Juniper Berry essential oil helps to fight anxiety, mental fatigue, nervous
tension and stress. It can clear mental clutter and confusion, revive
exhausted emotions, and strengthen nerves. It also helps to neutralize
negative emotions, particularly anger, aggression, or confusion, and imparts

generally regarded as non-toxic and non-sensitizing; however, it should
be avoided by those with kidney disease due to its nephrotoxic effect,
and it must not be used during pregnancy.
