Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang is a large tropical tree that grows to about 25 m tall and native to southern India, Philippines Java, Malaysia and other Pacific islands. The name Ylang Ylang means "flower of flowers" in Malayan, which describes the sweet, year-round blossoms that produce Ylang Ylang essential oil. There are pink, mauve and yellow-flowered varieties, and the finest essential oil comes from the yellow blossoms which are picked in early morning during the summer. The first part of the volatile oil (about 40%) drawn off during the steam distillation process is called Ylang Ylang extra essential oil, and is the highest quality, while that comes from the latter part of the process - known as the 'tail' of the distillate - is of a lower grade called Grade 1, 2, and 3. In any case, the therapeutic properties are the same, but the perfume of the lower grades is less refine.

Like Jasmine, Rose and Sandalwood essential oil, Ylang Ylang is antidepressant, aphrodisiac and sedative, and can be used to help people who have sexual difficulties, for these are so often the result of stress and anxiety. The calming and relaxing effect of Ylang Ylang essential oil may be responsible for its designation as an aphrodisiac, as it can be used to break the vicious circle of anxiety about sexual inadequacy, anxiety actually creating such inadequacy, which leads to further anxiety.

Ylang Ylang essential oil can also be used in the treatment of acne, depression, frigidity, high blood pressure, hyperpnea, impotence, insect bites, insomnia, nervous tension, palpitations, stress-related disorder and tachycardia.

The fragrance of Ylang Ylang extra oil is extremely heavy and sweet. It is often best used in blends with oils such as lemon or bergamot to offset the sweetness. The aroma has floral, tropical top notes and balsamic, woody, exotic undertones.

Ylang Ylang essential oil encourages positive emotion and feelings, helping to improve harmony and confidence. It minimizes aggressive behavior, such as anger and frustration, while fostering feeling of confidence, security and love. Ylang Ylang subdues anxiety and stress, and also reduces tension and stabilizes moods.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing; however, it can give rise to nausea or headache when use in high concentration or for too long time.
